This family of transporters shows conservation of 12 transmembrane helices as well as functionally significant amino acid residues (Joost and Thorens, 2001 [PubMed 11780753]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008] Function: High-affinity transporter for glucose and fructose Does not transport galactose, 2-deoxy-d-glucose and xylose. Subcellular Location: Membrane. Tissue Specificity: Expressed in small intestine and colon. Weakly expressed in testis and prostate. Similarity: Belongs to the major facilitator superfamily.
