Lentivirus, such as HIV-1 infects human CD4 plus cells. In the infected cells, HIV-1 reverse transcriptase performs viral cDNA synthesis using HIV-1 RNA genome as template. The double-stranded viral cDNA is then integrated into host cellular genome catalyzed by HIV-1 integrase. The integrated HIV-1 cDNA is called provirus, and the proviral DNA is transcribed into viral RNA by cellular RNA polymerases. Therefore, HIV-1 RNA polymerase major functions are different from that of cellular ones.
